Scientific studies concerning the lyrics of Hungarian folk songs arised only in the previous fifty years as earlier the study of the tune, the other basic element pushed them into the background to a great extent. This study mainly deals with the images appearing in Hungarian prisoners' songs – a genre which is still commonly unknown – mostly highlighting the metaphors of the PRISONER and the PRISON. The basis of metaphor analysis is the cognitive metaphor theory which provides the more detailed investigation of contents transferred by certain expressions. After the introduction and the setting of hypothesis the first part of the study overviews the basic points of the theory and looks at the historical background and the genre of prisoners's songs. The study then also mentions the different appearances of the metaphors PRISONER and PRISON which show a surprisingly great variety. The described examination proved the hypothesis according to which demand on a stylistic impression has significance even in this neglected group of folk songs.
