Vásárhelyi, Tamás – Györfy, Borbála: Generating a national civic event by a mosaic of science communication

A good two decades flew away, since agricultural probelms arising from the decline of pollinating insects inclined producers, researchers, service industries and decision makers for co-operation. Authors initiated a new nature protection campaign towards a new target group, the general public, to raise awareness, to increase knowledge and to foster willingness for real acts to help beneficial insects. The idea was to tag 10th of March as the Day of pollinators (so far in Hungarian speaking realm only). The paper introduces the prepaprtions before two civilians could step forward with such an idea, the communication strategy, contents, to help partners in their own activities, and the results of the first year.

Frey, Sándor – Bacsárdi, László: Fifteen years of the space web portal Űrvilág

The Hungarian astronautical web portal Űrvilág (i.e. Space World, was established in 2002. Since then, it has been working continuously, closely following the developments in the last quarter of the six-decades-old space age. Our mission is high-quality popularization of space activities in Hungarian language. Apart from covering major international space news, we concentrate on communicating the wide range of applications and spin-offs rooted in space activity to the general public. Our short, popular but professionally accurate news items appear on a daily basis, targeting an audience as broad as possible. We also provide the Hungarian space research community with a means of communicating their own achievements to the public. The past 15 years are sufficiently long for drawing certain conclusions. How can a science popularization daily news site be operated on a voluntary basis? Which were the successes and failures, and what are we proud of? Some lessons learnt from operating the portal may be applicable for other similar endeavours.

Szabó, Lilla: Fake news: virus, weed, water or villain? The framing of fake news by the media in the United States of America

The term fake news, i.e. news that spread false information, has been prevalent in public discourse since the 2016 presidential elections in the United States and the French presidential elections in 2017 (Veszelszki 2017). However, determining what pieces of news can be considered as fake news is not straightforward (Aczél 2017). The paper attempts to take a step towards understanding the way fake news is conceptualised in the context of the social networking site Facebook, with the help of cognitive linguistics, and more specifically, frame semantics (cf. Fillmore 2006). Based on the analysis of 102 articles posted on the website of six news outlets, it is hypothesized that fake news is frequently defined in terms of the FAKE NEWS IS A VIRUS (e.g. the dissemination of fake news), FAKE NEWS IS WEED (e.g. weeding out blatant fake news), FAKE NEWS IS WATER (tide of fake news) and FAKE NEWS IS AN ENEMY (e.g. the fight against fake news) conceptual metaphors, which appear not only within the given news article, but intertextually as well.

Zachar, Viktor: On the border of specialized translation, journalistic translation and journalism

On the border of specialized translation, journalistic translation and journalism: Creating Wikipedia articles in translator training

Interest in researching the translation of articles of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia arose only recently in Translation Studies. The current study looks at this phenomenon, which I have incorporated into my own course of teaching translation techniques for the first time in the spring semester of the academic year 2016/17, primarily through the lens of journalistic translation and not solely as a translation task.

Creating Wikipedia articles can enhance several skills and abilities, which are likewise important in the case of translators and journalists. The current study first describes – in accordance with the competencies defined by Nord (1992) – eight skills and abilities we can enhance with this task in translator training. In a second step, it presents the parameters of the specific task the students had to deal with. These can be considered as a starting point and developed further, if needed, to adjust this new type of task to the given circumstances.
