Robin, Edina: Reediting Translated Texts. What does the editor do with the translation?

Translation scholars have long been interested in studying the characteristics and process of retranslation. However, the descripitive study of reedited translated texts – as well as editing and revision in general – has so far evaded the watchful eyes of researchers. Mentions of reedited texts in translation studies are few and far between. Thus the aim of this paper is to summarize and connect the existing theories on retranslation and editing, and on that basis compare the first and then reedited translation of a modern literary novel. The study involves discussing the reasons behind reeditions, analyzing the operations of the editor and examining the effected revision parameters – that is exploring how re-editing can improve the quality of a translated text, without retranslating it. In this case study, two published Hungarian translations – the translation and reedition – of a classical tale, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis will be compared first using computerised statistical methods, and then by contrastive text analysis. The quantitative and qualitative analyses reveal that the editor concentrates mainly on the norms of the target language and – in contrast with the retranslation hypothesis – does not aim to bring the translation closer to the original source text. The editor performs a series of editorial operations which result in a text that is more acceptable and easier to process for the reader.

Németh, Luca Anna: An attempt at organization by the literary modernity – The story of the Vörösmarty Academy and its role in the literary life of the beginning of the 20th century

The story of the literary associations is considered a peripheral area in the mainstream researches of literary history, although these organizations join in numerous points to the main events of the history of the hungarian literature and culture. In the study I present the modern hungarian literature’s first attempt at organization called Vörösmarty Academy on the basis of bequests found in the Petőfi Literary Museum, as well as the other documents, correspondences and articles of the period, taking focus on the main purposes of the association and its role in the literary life of the beginning of the 20th century.

The members of the organization wanted to found a new literary prize which had a French sample and they started to work on a summary of the hungarian history of literature. Although these purposes wasn’t able to be realized because of historical reasons, the Vörösmarty Academy’s role and importance in the actuation and foster of the cult of Ady Endre can not be queried, and as the first attempt to be organized the progressive literature, can not be ignored in the course of review of this period of the hungarian literature.

Horváth, Krisztina: Investigation of the phenomenon of dual predicates in present Hungarian language

The present paper studies the phenomenon of dual predicates with the help of the text of the Hungarian National Corpus and a corpus collected by the author. It investigates the possible reasons of the expansion of the phenomenon using the results of a prevalence study after the introduction of the most important references. The study presents the proportion of a sort of structures containing the word kell beside the structures containing infinitive and dual predicates using a complex corpus containing written and spoken datas. The paper presents the differences between the inflection of the structures containing infinitive and dual predicates while searching for the reasons of the expansion of the phenomenon. It also engages in two common structures, the structure containing meg/el/azt kell mondjam and the structure containing imperative verb form and a substantive verb-auxiliary verb

Baranyai, Mihály: Linguistic particulars of secession in the short stories of Margit Kaffka

It was a long time debate whether we can speak of the seccesion trend in literature. The fact that the style of secession is accepted in literature is principally owed to the reforming work of Zoltán Szabó and his collegues. Its demarcation from similar trends such as impressionism and symbolism requires further inspection. In my essay I will describe the grammatic attributes of secession, sensitivity, illusions, decorative patterns taken from art, decorative style and at least but not last word and sentence framing that has a spindle-like construction in Margit Kaffka’s short stories written between 1909 and 1913. According to my essay the following assumption can be drawn: the main characteristics of Margit Kaffka’s use of language are decorative styles and symbols, decorative sensitivity and images drawn from the world of art and from the East. She frequently applies lyric tools in her literal works and likes to apply wavering and spindle-like sentences. On the other hand she rarely uses the style of images and static discription. Perhaps there is a tendency of less decorativity in her writings as the years pass on and her style becomes rather simplified.

Keywords: secession, decorativity, decorative pattern, stylization, spindle-like sentence construction
